The sponsors of Cruise Ships are referred to as godparents of the vessel; Godmother if the sponsor is female, and Godfather if the sponsor is male. This is a naval tradition which has continued for years, and it’s supposed to bless the Cruise Ship with good luck and safety.
Traditionally, female royal family members were chosen as Godmothers of Cruise Ships. But later on the Cruise Lines started naming famous politicians, and celebrities to make sure the ships got a lot of publicity. Today, we can see athletes, cartoon characters, and social workers being selected for the role.
Once a Godmother (or a Godfather in some cases) is chosen, they attend the christening and the launch ceremony of that Cruise ship. At this ceremony, the Godmother breaks a bottle of Champagne on the bow of the ship using a carefully rigged setup that helps them swing the bottle until it smashes against the ship.
Let’s look at a few Godmothers who are famous worldwide for their legacy and achievements;
